Mercurious NET (National Ear Theatre) is a sound-based interactive theatre App to access Silvia Mercuriali's unique Autoteatro shows from your own phone wherever you are.

By following simple instructions you become the main character in tightly choreographed fictional stories. Whether set in a public space or from the comfort of your own home, your surroundings becomes the backdrop of a fantastical parallel reality transforming the everyday into a new poetic world.
Without requiring you to act or improvise, the work leads you on a journey of rediscovery through everyday environments where you are at the centre of the story mixing reality and fiction presenting a new mode of interpreting the world around you.

Silvia Mercuriali has been working in theatre since 1998, creating events, site-specific installation, experimental theatre shows and immersive performances.

Since 2007 she has been focusing on developing the strategy of Autoteatro which she pioneered with Ant Hampton for the show Etiquette.

This strategy explores a new kind of performance whereby audience members perform the piece themselves, usually for each other. Participants are given instruction via audio, visual cues or text for what to do or say. By simply following these instructions an event begins to unfold.

Audience members relinquish the responsibility for their action abandoning themselves to pre-recorded instructions. The roles which identify the experience of going to the theatre are subverted. The actor doesn't know more then the audience anymore; the distinction between audience and performer is totally obliterated and the fourth wall disappears as the world of the fictional experience and the real experience coexist in the same space.

Silvia has experimented with this new strategy applying it, stretching it and moulding it to different technologies and in different contexts constantly inviting audiences to question what is real and what is not.

With the same strategy Silvia wrote Wondermart, an audio tour of a supermarket commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre; and The Eye, a short opera for an eye choreography, a podcast commissioned by Fuel for a series of podcasts on the body presented by The Guardian and Macondo for an audience of 100.

She has merged autoteatro with Cinema (as il pixel rosso), immersive theatre (as Berlin, Nevada) and in One-to-One performances.

Silvia has collaborated with many different artists including musician and composer Tommaso Perego, and Dominic Ffytche clinical senior lecturer at The Institute of Psychiatry at London’s Kings College.

She has presented work internationally and has been commissioned by cultural centres and theatres including Brisbane Powerhouse (AUS), Museum of Art of Kochi (JP) as well as UK commissioning bodies such as Welcome trust, Fuel Theatres, The roundhouse, Battersea Arts Centre and Harrogate Theatre & Yorkshire Festival.

Silvia Has taught at Central School of Speech and Drama, Central Saint Martins, SUssex University, Middlesex University and Fourth Monkey Drama School and lead workshops in Europe, America, Africa, and Australia.
